yellow and green succulent

Succulent that is green and vibrant yellow, looks like a sunburst type, but when I purchased two sunburst types they look nothing like the photo.

Hi Bryan, what you have is Aeonium ‘Sunburst’, as the name suggests.

Aeonium are well adapted to your area, as they originate in the Canary Islands and Tenerife, which have a very similar climate to California.

The problem with a lot of variegated plants, succulents no exception, is that the variegation is not really stable, and can revert to either straight green, or even all white, which usually kills the plant eventually.

Variable amounts of the different colours can make these seem to be totally different types of plants.

Sometimes, the same plant can look quite different in different conditions, especially light levels.

It’s possible that your plant is going through a seasonal change, like many other Aeoniums, and at other times of the year will change again.

Mutations in the shape of the plant will occur too, which is where some of our most valued hybrids and forms originate.

If you think you have been sold two entirely different plants from what was advertised, go back to the place you bought them, and let them know.
