What is your goal?

Do you have a vision of what you want? There are so many gorgeous roses, with good disease resistance, so your options are endless.

What exactly is your idea of 'responsible'? Most roses are not invasive, and easy to manage so they don't get out of hand.

If it were me, I would choose those that have a good crop of rose hips, so the birds can have access to a food source in the fall. Good options here would be any of the rugosas, or their progeny. 'Hansa' is one that always appeals to me, and they can be found on old farmsteads, beloved by the original pioneers.
