Those are not regular roots
by: Jacki Cammidge, Certified Horticulturist

Those are what is known as ‘aerial’ roots, because, they’re growing in the air. Some plants have these naturally, and they provide support for the trunk, as well as get nourishment from the soil.

This plant seems to be quite happy with the situation, so nothing to do on your part. In time, you could repot it into a larger pot, which might keep it happy for a bit longer, but realistically, this plant could get huge, and will only grow in a big greenhouse situation. They are not really good as houseplants, except when really small.

Enjoy it as it is, then sell it, give it away to someone that has the right environment for it (a botanical garden, maybe?), or just let it go back to the earth.
