I have a plant that I do not know how to care for because I’m not sure what it is and therefore what it needs! I’m trying a grow light as I have cats that will kill my plants so I know it’s definitely reaching for light but I’m not sure how to fix that issue yet. It has thick stems and thin waxy leaves. It flowered a couple years ago but hasn’t since. It resembles something similar to a Jade plant only in how the stems look. Please help!

Kalanchoe?
by: Jacki Cammidge, Certified Horticulturist

This looks a lot like Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, which tends to get this messy sprawling growth if it’s left to its own devices. If it’s not that (sorry, hard to tell with the purple background) then it’s some other kind of Kalanchoe.

I would cut it right back and propagate the tips of the stems to make more bushy and compact growth, in new plants. Don’t be scared, there’s a lot of growth there and lots to experiment with. Here’s a page on succulent plant propagation, and more on pruning them here.
