By Barbara Pleasant, the author of The Southern Garden Advisor and Garden Stone, (winner of the 2003 Garden Globe Award of Achievement for Writing) with photography by Rosemary Kautzky, this book is an invaluable resource for me.
Although it’s not a complete reference of succulent plants (which is the focus of this site) it has tons of interesting information about many different house plants, which are a constant source of amazement to me, and help me provide useful information to my visitors.
Once you get a handle on the eclectic groupings of plants by type it gets easier to find what you’re looking for.
Sometimes all you know is a general kind of plant, such as flowering bulbs, so instead of wading through all kinds of botanical names that mean nothing, you can easily break it down into what the plant looks like.
I’ve grown many of these 160 plants in various houses, and killed many of them too! In Barbara’s book, she goes into great detail about what each plant or type of plant prefers in the way of water, light and soil. Problems such as diseases and insects are discussed, and propagation, pruning and care.
The illustrations of each kind of plant are clear and obvious – if your plant is here, you’ll recognize it!
Altogether a very useful book to have on the library shelves, and well worth the $25 or less price tag. Softcover.
