Once you start looking at succulent plants you begin to realize how many different kinds there are.

Tall, short, warty, sleek; they're all over the map, and that's what makes them so fascinating.

The hardy ones survive outside for the winter in most areas of Canada; they're surprisingly tough.

Tender types are brought indoors for the winter and coddled until the springtime.  Either type are addictive and it's easy to see how and why we are so attracted to them.

Whether you're growing them for a mixed planting outdoors for the summer, or in crafts, or just as houseplants in a sunny window, you'll quickly find that you need more.  More variety, more types, more of one specific genus that you find a fascination with.

With thousands of species to choose from, Echeveria is a good choice

The family that contains Echeveria is huge - there are thousands of different kinds and types, but most of what you will find online are tried and tested as succulent houseplants.

There are also many different Crassula

And you thought that Crassula only consisted of the Jade Plant - not so.  There are hundreds of beautiful forms of this genus.  This one (above) is quite often found in collections.  It's known as Crassula 'Green Pagoda' and you can see why.

Aloe variegata

Aloe is a great genus to start with.  Many are slow growing and stay small a long time, and best of all, they create their own family so you can soon have more than you bargained for, to give as gifts.

With the enormous choice of different plants to choose from, if you're just starting out you may want to buy a selection that has been trialed and proven easy to grow.

There are some collections that contain a lot of different kinds of plants, either as cuttings or little plants so you can see how to grow them without a huge cost outlay.

The bigger the plant, the bigger the cost, both for the plant itself, and the shipping of it, so why not start your collection with your own plants from seed?

Most succulent seeds are easy to grow and soon you'll have your collection to swap to others with a similar addiction.

Here in Canada, in the not so distant past, succulents have been hard to come by.  Not any more!  There are lots of online sellers, it's just a matter of finding them.  Here are some to look at;
