unknown beauty

My neighbor dug up a plant and she asked me if I wanted it as she was going to throw it out because she thought it was ugly.

I took home a root ball and put it in a pot in my greenhouse last fall and promptly broke my leg a week later.

This spring when I could get around again I went into the greenhouse thinking it would be dead and this is what I found.

I think it is beautiful but I do not know what it is or how to take care of it. Can you help me please?

Hi Georgene, sorry about your leg! Hope it’s all better now and you’re back on track.

From what I can see of your plant in the picture, it is probably one of the border stonecrops, Sedum spectabile. If the leaves are fairly fleshy, this could be it. Have a look at this page, maybe you can see if it’s close; Sedum for borders.

The most common one is Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’, in which case you’ve got a great low care hardy perennial plant that will stay in bounds but be reliable and beautiful for years to come.

Best of luck!
Jacki

Ugly plant. (not)

Thank you Jacki. I do believe that is it. The leaves are very fleshy and I have not had it long enough for it to bloom but I cannot wait. Thank you again.
