Mushrooms are growing all over my yard and in my garden. I’ve tried everything to get rid of them but they keep popping up.
How do I get rid of them?

Not Enough Information by: Jacki Cammidge, Certified Horticulturist So, again, I’m flying blind. I have no idea where you are, and with no pictures to go by, no clue what we’re dealing with. Here goes anyway; mushrooms are spread by spores. So if you’re anywhere near where there may have been mushrooms in the past, you will get mushrooms. IE: near a forest, or a place where there are horses, or any kind of wood. That basically means everywhere. Mushrooms get established in buried wood, under the ground, where they live and form mycelium, or the long white roots. Then, after a rain fall, often in the fall or late summer, they fruit, which is the mushroom that you see on the surface. If you live in a subdivision where the contractor bulldozed the existing forest and buried the wood, you’ll get mushrooms. How to eliminate them (or diminish them); mushrooms prefer an acidic soil, so start sprinkling wood ash or dolomite lime where they seem to be most established. Then, if any emerge, pull them up and put them in the garbage (don’t try to compost them). This could take a while, and you may never be able to get rid of them completely. |
