Hi, great website! I just brought this home from the supermarket and looked through hundreds of pictures and cannot identify. I’m in Boston and have a large southern window. Is direct light good? It looks healthy and I’d like to get off to a good start!

Hi Steven – thank you so much!

This plant is probably not recognizable at this stage of growth – it’s just a baby, and you may find pictures of it much larger, or even in flower. Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is also known as the Flapjack Plant for its growth habit which looks like stacked pancakes.

Full sun is perfect, in fact these plants really like a lot of light. Eventually, they can reach a height of around 4-5′ tall, which makes it much more difficult to keep them indoors. Luckily, they’re easy to grow from cuttings, and if you chop the top off, it will produce much more compact growth. Of course, it probably won’t flower in this case, so it’s a catch 22.

Good luck with the Flapjacks!
