My mother gave this plant to me today. I have no idea what it is. It has large fleshy leaves growing off large fleshy leaves! There’s two stalks in the middle and at the base of the larger leaves are soft hair-like things. I hope you know what it is so I can have an idea how to care for it! Thank you!
Great haul, Romona! This is the Queen of the Night or Dragon Fruit, one of the most interesting of all the epiphytes, which means they originate in trees.
Related plants that you might know are the Epiphyllum, known as Orchid Cactus, and Schlumbergera, the Christmas Cactus.
These plants are unique in the beautiful flowers, in the case of the Queen of the Night, they are white, and highly perfumed. They open at night, and only last for a few hours, so they’re easy to miss when they bloom – it takes a concerted effort to see them opening, and yes, you can actually watch them open, just like in time lapse photography.
