Is it a Jade?

Kalanchoe blossfeldiana

Kind of looks like jade, but makes red flowers and leaf borders aren't smooth

It was given to me by a friend's mother about 15 years ago.

It's not jade, but looks similar.

Has red flowers that cluster (no photo of those).

Stems become thicker and more upright with better sunlight than it has had recently.

This is most likely Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, or Flaming Katy. You're totally right - it needs more light. Even more, it needs a good hard pruning too.
