I have several large elephant ear plants that I planted every year and dig up in the fall some of my bulbs are ginormous now. This year I have gotten several seed pods and I would like to know how to go about planting them.

Finally, maturity!

That type of bulb takes a lot of years to get big enough to flower.

There are several plants that go by the name of elephant ear, but luckily, they’re all tropical plants and grow in moist, warm environments. This means that if you copy that type of habitat, the seeds will grow fine.

They won’t need any special care, like stratification – you should be able to simply plant the seeds right in some damp potting soil, and grow them under lights in a terrarium (for more humid air) until next spring. They’ll take at least a couple of years to get big enough to make a show, but they’ll be fun to grow.

By the way, the seed pod will hold several to many seeds – pluck it off the plant when you’re sure it’s fully mature, put it in a small paper bag or envelope to dry and split open, then sow the seeds as I outlined above.
