Brown balls

by Tiffany

I found brown balls in my outdoor plant that are hard and when I busted them they let out powder. When I wet them they let off smoke. Can you tell me what it is? Do I need to be concerned?

You haven't said what kind of plants, so I'm just guessing here.

The description you give is of fungus. The powder is the millions of spores that you've just spread around, so expect to see more in the future. Most times, there are several factors that have to happen all at the same time; temperature, humidity, and moisture.

Also, most fungus only live on dead wood, so check that the plants are still alive.

I wish you had put a picture of the fungus on here, makes it so much easier to envision what's really happening.

By the way, it's not smoke, just more spores.
