Avocado tree is losing its leaves

I am new to South West Florida and know that plants are different here. My boyfriend has an avocado tree that is quite old and very tall, over 15 feet. The leaves are turning purpleish and falling off. Is this normal? I tried to research this and cannot find out what is happening. Will the tree lose all of its leaves and is this is normal? He doesn't remember the tree losing its leaves, but he is not in FL in the summer. There are not any other avocado trees in the area so I doubt it could have a disease, but wouldn't rule it out. It has been very dry, so we were wondering if we need to water it, which he has never had to do in the past. Thank you

I'm sorry. I'm good, but I'm not psychic. I would need a picture. And more information. Is this tree growing outdoors? In a pot? What kind of conditions - ie: full sun? Etc etc.
