I received an American Persimmon tree seedling (I believe that’s what they’re called) from my township a few months back and I’m wondering when it should be planted in the ground. It began to sprout a tiny green vine at one point that eventually died and fell off.
Research tells me that it requires some sun but not necessarily too much. Is that correct? But the more important answer I need is when i would have to remove it from the pot and plant it in the ground. Thank you very much.

This tree is most likely Diospyros virginiana, the common persimmon. They are usually grown for their spectacular fall foliage, and of course, the fruit.
The general consensus is that you should plant them outdoors in the place they will grow for the rest of their life after the fall rains begin.
They do need full sun if they’re to produce fruit, so not sure what your research means. They don’t like too much heat though, so if your summers are unbearably hot, choose a place that gets some afternoon shade.
Due to their long taproot, it’s recommended to plant your seedling in the fall (right now) in a fertile, well drained soil. Mulch around the trunk, but maybe for now, put a rabbit guard around it to prevent mice and other vermin from nibbling on it. They don’t get really tall (35 feet, according to my research) so it won’t need staking.
Is your plant outdoors already? If so, good, it will already be hardened off. If not, get it outside now, so in two weeks it should be okay to plant in the ground.
