A friend asked me what this is. I haven’t come across it. It reminded me a little of ceropegia but wrong colour and thicker stems

Could be Ceropegia
by: Jacki

The Ceropegia you're maybe thinking of is Ceropegia woodii, the one referred to as Hearts Entangled. But, there are others. However, nowhere do I find any reference to red coloring in the leaves like yours.

So this one, Ceropegia radicans for instance, looks a lot like the leaf shape, but it doesn't seem to say that it turns red (not sure if your friends plant is always red, or just for the fall).

You also don't say if this is an indoor (house plant) or outside, and in which planting zone. Sorry I can't help without more information.
