A bolting tropical?

Hi I am wondering what this plant is doing! I don’t even know what kind of plant this is! It has been making that extra stem for months now! I thought that it would unwind itself & be a new leaf bunch, but it never happened. The leaves on the top are new.

No it's not bolting

But what an odd thing for it to do. Bolting would refer to a flower forming, but this looks like a growing stem and normal foliage.

In doing some research I came across Aucuba 'Gold Dust' which is actually not in indoor plant, but meant for growing in hedging situations, or as an accent plant.

I came across some information that you can grow it as either; indoors or outdoors, so it looks like it's very versatile.

This post from You Had Me at Gardening has some specific details for growing it.

Personally, I might propagate the top of the long stem, then cut it all off. It may happen again, but it's unlikely.
