I have always been fascinated with rain water salvage; from being a little kid and everyone had a rainbarrel to capture water for the garden. They fell out of favor until relatively recently, and it's now all the rage.

I have three that get fairly frequent use in the summer (to catch our sporadic rainfall) and one of them has an old fashioned cast iron hand pump.

Important things to remember is to keep a screen on them to keep mosquitoes from getting to the water to lay their eggs, and also to keep squirrels or other small animals from falling in. Squirrels in particular seem fascinated with rain barrels - and they can worm their way under a window screen too!
