Twig Handles

Unique Rustic Twigs
for Twig Handled Trugs, Gates and Birdcages

Whenever I go up in the bush on a hike or on a walk up the gravel road I live on, I see bent twigs that I collect for making twig handles for gates, doors, boxes and other rustic craft projects. They fit right into the shabby chic look of rustic decor.

The ability to find twigs bent into handle shapes by nature is a fine art, honed over years of training.

Your eye gradually becomes tuned to noticing them among all the other twigs out there.

You can also make your own twig handles out of willows or other flexible shrubs bending them in the early spring.

Wait until they grow for a couple of seasons, and then if you remember where you made them, collect them.

I usually collect them for a while before the right project and the right handle connect into a work of art.

I have a selection to choose from that are dry, ready to go.

I wire them onto bird cages or broody hen boxes made from barn boards, or put them on tin can barn board planters. They also make great door handles for rustic twig gates or painted doors.

Wire a twig onto a basket or tin box for a unique crafty way to store your painting supplies, display your plants or to carry garden tools.

Picking the right one for your twig handled trugs is sometimes challenging, and forces you to think outside the box.

I've found that sometimes you have to put the twig on diagonally, instead of directly across the box. This gives it even more country appeal.

I get great satisfaction out of using natures free store for making neat unique and twiggy accents that are not only beautiful, but useful too.
