Twig Handled Trugs
Rustic Basket, Creel, Tote or Caddie
Whether you call them tool caddies, creels, totes or baskets, twig handled trugs are a fun way to carry your tools for gardening, seedlings for planting, or for storing rustic craft supplies.
Tools for twig craft or plant collecting can be gathered in one place and kept neat and ready for use in an instant. A few primitive trugs with solid bottoms can be used for the recycling, kindling, seedling transfer into the garden and many other uses. I put my paints for making barnboard signs in a green painted twig handled trug, with the paintbrushes and other assorted tools handy in a tin can. I can quickly see what I have to work with in a glance and any bits of bark, rust or other debris falls right through the twigs on the bottom. Propagation tools and supplies have a permanent spot in a trug. The inspiration for my rustic style of trug comes from the well-known Sussex trug, made in England for use in the garden as a harvesting basket, for kindling or even for your knitting. I like the look of rustic and country style accessories, even more if I can actually use them, and handmade items have a widespread appeal. They mean so much more when given as a gift, or using a special twig collected on a memorable holiday. My trugs are meant to be used, not for display on a shelf out of reach. I don’t even mind if they get dinged, damaged, scratched or dented in a full day’s use – that just adds to the patina. They’re so handy, which makes them a great gift filled with jars of pickles made from your garden produce, jam in special jars, pot pourri, or other handmade crafts.
The recipient can use them in the garden once they use up your gift. You’ll find many uses for these unique handmade rustic crafts. Fill them with pine cones or twigs from the forest to display beside your fire place or mantel for a seasonal accent, or use one for towels or facecloths in your powder room. Whatever you use a twig handled trug for in your home, you can be proud of the fact that you designed and built such an unusual and useful item.
