Rustic Tool Box

I've always loved antiques, and just plain old salvaged junk to make into unique and different planters for succulents.

Here's a little tool box that I found at the dump and sneaked it into my truck - I couldn't bear to see it get burned.

I drilled four holes into the bottom of it for drainage, as that's very important for succulent plants; especially in this case as the wood was well fitted together and would possibly swell up with rain - a disaster for those drought loving plants like the Sempervivum I planted in it.

I used soil which I amended with some rock dust, worm castings and turkey grit for drainage, and mulched with the lovely red lava rock. I also used some darker lava rock which is sold for barbecues for an accent.

The whole thing is only about 10 inches the shortest way, and about 12 inches the long way, so I've used lots of different spiderweb hens and chicks, and others that stay really small.

It doesn't get much better than that!

Hi Stick Woman,
You are in the perfect area for doing all the neat crafts with twigs - the Peace Country grows the best willows for twig furniture!

Your little rustic tool box is the perfect example of taking a discarded item and making it usable again, and beautiful.

If this interests you, look on my Twig Handled Trugs page for more inspiration.

Wow!

This is WAY too cool! What a great idea.
I love it! Just a quick question though - is there a way to view the photos in a larger format. This is one I'd like to have a good look at.
