Rosette of leaves at the bottom, single stem with weeping tree like limbs

by Virginia Guindon
(Oxford, MI)

I love this plant and lost the name! This plant has rounded rosette of leaves at the base. The leaves are green with a purple tiger stripe. A single stem grows up from the center of the plant and have limbs of a weeping habit. Looks like a small weeping succulent tree. Limbs have tiny what appears to be floweres that turn into small succulent leaves. I did read about this plant when I first purchased it and it was a newly discovered genus from the western United States. There wasn't even a cold hardiness on it yet.

Drought Smart Plants reply:

You're the second person to ask me about this plant - it's beautiful, and I wish I could help you with the name.

This post is the same plant, it looks like: Tree Succulent which someone has ID'd as Kalanchoe humilis - I'm not sure this is correct.

If anyone out there knows what this incredibly interesting looking plant is, please post a comment to let us know. Meanwhile, I'll check in all the usual places to try and find its identity.

Happy Succulent Growing!
Jacki

I posted original question
by: Virginia

I returned to the store where I purchased this plant. By the way mine is thriving! Looks great! The store said that they call it a Desert Suprise. Now when I looked up Desert Suprise, I did not see the exact plant that I have. I know somewhere, and its driving me nuts, that I saw a dedicated web site for people to enter information on this plant because not much was known about it, example...hardiness. Of Course, I can't find the site now either. But the description and the photos were exactly like mine. Anyway we at least have a name. I think it may be a variation of the "Desert Suprise" I saw today on line. Mine definatley has a weeping habitat to it. The small florets are turning into leaves.

What a Surprise!
by: Jacki

I believe this website could be the one you're thinking of: Daves Garden Plant Files.

They have a great system for finding information about plants - however, the drawback is that to narrow it down, you do need some part of the name to get started. Unfortunately, searching for Desert Suprise, with other spellings too (like Desert Surprise) didn't come back with any info. We'll just have to keep trying!
