red center leaves that turn green as they grow

Hi Tammie, this is some type of Bromeliad, a large genus of many beautiful species.

Many have this trait of changing color, and some are quite spectacular, even without much in the way of flowers.

The tiny blooms happen deep down in the center of the plant, which is sometimes called a ‘vase’ as that’s where water will collect from rainfall, and the plant can survive for a long time with this cistern of water. Sometimes insects fall in and drown, and the plant gets its fertilizer this way. Icky, but fascinating.

Some of the most interesting of this type of plant are the Queens Tears and Blushing Bromeliad.

In an interesting twist, the Pineapple is a Bromeliad.

Happy Succulent Gardening!
