Pond Edges

by Jacki
(Grand Forks, B.C. Canada)

If you've got a garden pond, sometimes when there's a drought - when isn't there? the water level drops and the rubber liner will be exposed. There are two major drawbacks to this. The rubber will degrade in direct sunlight and exposure to UV rays, and it also looks ugly. Here's a way to prevent damage to the liner, and make your pond look great all year.

Find, scrounge or otherwise recycle used carpet. Strips cut from it and draped over the edge of the pond into the water will protect the epdm liner, and then you can plant it by sprinkling the leaves of Sedum acre and other small types of creeping Sedum so they will grow into the pile of the old carpet; the carpet will act as a wick and stay moist so the plants will form a lush ground cover right down to the water's edge. Beautification, and protection, all in one.
