Calling Organic Volunteers in Grand Forks B.C. and area: Are you looking for a way to deepen your understanding of organic gardening and xeriscaping? Are you eager to learn and gain knowledge, but feel you do best in a hands on situation? This volunteer situation may be right up your alley!I’m looking for enthusiastic gardeners to help with my organic and sustainable vegetable gardens, and xeriscaping demonstration gardens. Experience is not essential, but interest is.
The tasks I would like to accomplish are general maintenance, making raised beds and also the rebuilding of fencing around the gardens, which must be high enough to keep deer out. This is an ongoing job, one which really requires more than one pair of hands to hold wire in place, stretch it between posts and so on. Other tasks for the garden in 2012 include building hypertufa pinch pots and sculptures, using that incredibly addicting mixture of cement powder, perlite and peat moss and perhaps some other experimental mixtures to make garden statues, planters and other unique and different ways to display hardy succulents. An artistic type, possibly with some experience making pots out of clay would suit this role. I also would love to make more patio blocks and pave certain areas of the garden to make it easier to make seating areas. I also need a patient type of person to do some propagating – this will be done with me, as I am loath to give up my favorite job, but I don’t mind sharing the task and my knowledge! This is not difficult work, but it is a little tedious and fiddly. I grow thyme in plugs, Sedum, Sempervivum and Jovibarba for sale mail order, so growing lots of these is critical for the next season’s sales. There may be other interesting nursery tasks as the summer goes on, and can be discussed as they arise. None of these gardening tasks are heavy lifting, or too onerous, but having been diagnosed with MS recently, I have found that I no longer have the stamina to complete even regular light maintenance such as weeding, replacing overgrown plants, or other types of work. There is no pay for this work, and unfortunately I don’t have any accommodation so would be best suited to those living in or around Grand Forks, British Columbia and who have their own transportation. In recompense, there will be ample opportunity for acquiring xeric plants, and homegrown organic vegetables. If any of this sounds like it might suit you, please contact me directly.
