If this plant is somehow related to the leaves in the background, I'm going to guess that it's some kind of Bromeliad. There are many different kinds of plants in the family, so tracking down which one this is will be a quest, for sure.
Bromeliads are a unique family of primarily jungle plants, and tend to have really small and weak root systems. They get most of their nutrients from water that falls as rain into a 'vase' or reservoir. As insects fall in and drown, the plant utilizes the nutrients. Kind of icky, but interesting.
