Make a Garlic Braid

to Store Your Fresh Garlic

Garlic ready to braid

To make a garlic braid to store your fresh organic garlic for the winter is a simple old time task.

The ideal conditions for storing garlic are dry and warm, so hanging a garlic braid right in your kitchen within easy reach of the cook is perfect.

Learn how to make a garlic braid for gifts or for your own use.

Here's how to make a Garlic Braid:

Carefully dig your garlic so as not to stretch or break the stems, and place in a shallow screen to dry.

The best place is airy, warm and dry - I use my greenhouse. Once dug, it’s important to properly cure your garlic to be able to store for the longest possible time.

Never freeze or keep the garlic bulbs in a cold place such as a refrigerator as when they come back into the warmth of the kitchen they will quickly sprout and become unusable.

After the bulbs are thoroughly dry and cured you can make your garlic braid.

Select thirteen firm bulbs, with no obvious flaws or damaged parts.

Dampen the stems and leaves to make them more pliable.

Arrange three bulbs to form the bottom of the braid then start braiding the stems together.

Add one bulb at a time and continue braiding until you reach the end of the thirteen bulbs.

Wrap the braid with wire, twine or raffia and make a loop to hang it in your kitchen within easy reach.
