Just found along a fence like a vine
by Scott Partridge
(Pace, Fl. USA)
Seems vine like, lots of flowers on this vine... the picture was taken in August in Pensacola Fl.
Drought Smart Plants reply:
Scott, what you've found is a passionflower, or Passiflora caerulea. What an absolutely stunning flower! The colour is fabulous, and that intricate form is fascinating.
Interestingly, in days gone by these flowers were used to teach new converts to Christianity about the stations of the cross and many other symbols in religion. This is where the name of the plant originated - named after the 'passion' for Christ. The intricacy of the bloom is indeed fascinating, and the ease with which this plant grows belies its fragile appearance.
Once the flowers are done, an edible fruit will grow - I have no idea what this will taste like! If you're interested you can keep track of when the blooms wither and collect the seed pods to grow, and as it's a perennial vine in your climate, grow it in large pots beside an archway or along a fence for more of those glorious flowers.
