house plant large dark green leaves, long stems with one large white leaf
Drought Smart Plants reply:
Actually, that's not a leaf, it's a flower. These are the strangest looking plants in bloom, very similar to Calla lilies. These are Spathiphyllum species, also called Spath, Phyllum or Peace Lily.
They dislike direct sunlight, which makes them the perfect choice for dim situations such as offices.
They are often grown as just a foliage plant in these kinds of places, and surprise the inhabitants with their blooms.
To get them to bloom frequently, they require ample water with regular fertilizer.
These are long lived attractive plants and show best in a glossy container, and displayed at eye level so you can see more clearly the interesting blooms.
Interesting fact about Spathiphyllum species: they have been found to help remove formaldehyde, benzene and carbon monoxide from tainted indoor air, based on studies done by NASA.
Happy Indoor Gardening!
