Dark green succulent with flat broad leaves about 16" long

Hi Jack, it's hard to tell with some plants - they all look the same until they bloom. Here is a potential suspect:

Clivia, which has these strappy leaves, but then it will come out with a cluster of really brightly colored orange blooms periodically. Once you see them, never forgotten.

If this is what it is, then keeping it in bright light, with a dormant period in the winter will induce blooming in the summer. Clivia is classed as a bulb, which means that it won't like being kept too wet.

It's other name is Kafir Lily, so that will give you an idea of its origins, in the African veldt.
