Resource of Mail Order Specialty Plant Nurseries
This is a resource for gardeners to buy plants online in all countries:Canadian Online Nurseries Australian Plants Online South Africa Mail Order Nurseries in the UK Mail Order Plants in the US These online nurseries have succulents for sale to ship within their own country. As a Canadian grower of Sedum, Sempervivum, succulents and Thyme, it’s with great regret that I can’t ship to other countries – I get requests from the US all the time, and people there are puzzled that I have to turn down their orders. The reason for turning them down is this: To ship to other countries, first of all, you must find out if it’s legal to ship to that location, and if it’s allowed, what requirements they have to do so. Some require a phytosanitary certificate; others will only accept soilless plants, or cuttings. The next step is to get a phytosanitary inspection which entails me requesting the Canadian Ministry of Agriculture inspector to visit my nursery and inspect the order. They can’t just inspect a block of plants that you might pick the order from, it has to be the pulled order. There is a time limit on the phytosanitary certificate that they issue, in most cases two weeks, so I have that much time to pack and ship the order. That’s just the beginning. The order must be left open to go through the US border, which is Danville, Washington border crossing near to where I live. I have to pay a fee each time I cross, I must have a valid passport and driver’s license, and I also have to pay for customs brokering. Then, if all is good with the paperwork, I’m allowed to cross into the US to go to Colville, Washington and mail my parcel, which if I’m lucky, I’ve remembered to bring the packing tape to close it with. Then on the way back, I must cross on the Canadian side, and go through the third degree there. This whole process takes approximately one hour to inspect and obtain the phytosanitary certificate, two hours to get to the post office and back, making a total of over 3 hours of valuable time which could be better spent. I can’t realistically expect a customer to pay for all this, so I’ve decided to concentrate my efforts on my Canadian customers.
