Unrooted Sedum Cuttings

For the most economical way to plant your green roof with colour, unrooted Sedum cuttings are the way to go. They are shipped fresh, usually cut the same day or the day before shipping from my healthy stock plants of over 30 varieties.

Allowing the unrooted cuttings to callous and dry a bit before planting can help them root successfully. Sedum cuttings will grow roots even without being planted, in dry conditions.

I recommend planting them in fairly dry soil, either engineered or native to stop them from rotting before they root.

Unrooted Sedum cuttings are sold either in unlabeled mixed varieties, or one type depending on availability.

Coverage:500 unrooted Sedum cuttings will fill an area of around 400 square feet of green roof – spacing them between 9 and 12 inches apart.

Minimum order is 500 cuttings, priced at $.20 each ($100 plus shipping – Canada Post or Greyhound Bus)

This is also an economical way to grow lots of plugs for planting in landscapes or tapestry beds. Contact me to tell me what your requirements are and I will custom pick your order.

Plugs – 72 cell plugs

I grow lots of Sedum plugs in 72 cell plug trays, because of the fact that I get a lot of plants that quickly fill in the cell and are shippable within a month or two. These are usually custom grown, although I sometimes have them on hand. These are perfect for larger numbers of green roof plants, especially if you have to hold them for a while before planting. Minimum order is ½ a flat per Sedum variety or my choice of mixed varieties. Thyme ½ flat per variety.

Plugs – 50 cell plugs

Some Sedum, such as Sedum for borders which are the larger sized Sedum telephium and Sedum spectabile varieties have to be grown in a larger sized cell.

The roots on these types are fleshy and more like a carrot in size, so the smaller cells fill in too quickly.

The 50 cell plugs are a good size for planting immediately in the landscape, or for one gallon pot production. These are always custom grown, and require a lead time of four to six weeks to produce. The soil volume in the 50 cell plugs is exactly the same as a 2” pot. Minimum order is ½ flat, minimum ten per variety.

Bare Root

In the past few years I’ve found that many succulent plants including Sedum Sempervivum and Jovibarba actually prefer to be packaged and shipped bare root. Some of the tender succulent plants are rooted in a communal flat, and at shipping time they are carefully pulled out with a small amount of soil still attached, wrapped in newspaper and packed in a cardboard box.

Bare root plants once they arrive will be ready to pot into your terracotta pot or other container, in dry soil.

Hold off on the water for a couple of days, and then water thoroughly with tempered or warm water.

Never use water from the tap if you use a water softener, as the salt will harm the roots.

Rainwater captured from a roof is best, as there are no added chemicals or minerals that can mark the leaves. This water should be room temperature.

Shipping plants without a pot is an environmentally sound practice as the pot or flat can be re-used or recycled, and shipping costs are much less without the weight of the pot and soil. It also allows you to custom tailor the soil to your particular conditions.

2” Pots

Many of the succulent plants I grow are small in size when just rooted enough to ship, and will fit perfectly in a two inch pot.

In many cases, they are shipped fairly dry so as not to rot in the close environment during transit, so when you receive your order they can be carefully acclimatized to brighter light, and watered with lukewarm water, either from your tap or tempered or rainwater, which has no added chemicals such as chlorine, or minerals from the earth such as calcium which can mark the leaves.

Never use water from the tap if you have a water softener unit, as the salt in the water will harm the roots, and possibly kill the plant.

4” Pots

Some of the plants I grow are too big to fit into a two inch pot, so they are sized for the four inch sized pot.

In many cases, such as with the Sedum for Borders which are the larger Sedum telephium and Sedum spectabile, they make a perfectly sized plant for the four inch pots.

Sometimes if they’re well rooted they are shipped without the pot, and then when you receive them you can either pot them up into a similar sized pot; a bigger one gallon sized pot; or straight into the landscape. I’ve also just set them upright into a flat or box, where they will happily grow and root until you’re ready to plant them in their final spot.

Shipping the Sedum for Borders without a pot is environmentally sound practice, as the pot can be re-used or recycled, and shipping costs are less.
